What’s your name, how do you volunteer with GAP, and when did you first start volunteering with us?

RUTH BIRD - Enrichment and Foster

What made you decide to become a GAP volunteer?

During Covid, a friend of mine adopted a Greyhound from GAP. Her name was ABBY and she has a nose that twitches independently from the rest of her snout! It is so funny. Anyway, I fell in love with this strange breed there and then. I'd never met one before and found them the most loving, quirky, funny, adorable hounds I'd ever met. I wanted to be around them as much as I could, but didn't feel ready to adopt one myself. Volunteering for GAP was a happy medium as I got to hang out with snoots all day long any time I wanted and it was free:)! What could be better?

What’s your favourite part of being a GAP volunteer?

My favourite part of Volunteering is the snoots of course. They deliver a dose of happiness everytime you see them. And they are always so happy to see you. The joy I get from being able to play, groom, snuggle, walk and kiss....the snoots, is the best and I hope they feel the same. I also love grooming them when I can and get their lovely coats to a nice glossy sheen. Which can be a challenge as they are often very furry:) I really enjoy being able to bring a bit of enrichment and love to their days, as they can be long in the kennels and they all deserve so much love and care. I wish I could get to them all.

What’s your best story or memory from your time volunteering with us?

I have so many best stories from Vollying with GAP, it is impossible to choose!. I have also taken on fostering occasionally and I do have some funny tales from that. Some which I maybe shouldn't share (I'm probably not the best foster carer...I'm too soft and I can't help it if they like couches).  But in terms of being an Enrichment Volly, I really enjoy meeting the personalities of all the dogs, as they are just so different. From boisterous, goofy, charming, quiet, shy, boofy, silly, soft, loving, and playful, I love to try and be the best version of me for the dog I am working with and connecting with the dog, even if it is just for a limited time.

One story at Tulla, I was in one of the kennels with a lovely black boy, and he was really quiet and on his bed. It was after meal time and he was resting. He let me lie next to him and I just recall stroking his head and belly. Everytime I would stop, he'd give me a little nudge to keep going, as they do, and me being a sucker, kept going. It turned late and after a while I heard one of the kennel attendants tell another that I was in with (I forget his name) and that I was probably alright just to stay there even though Volly hours were over. I felt good, for one, I got to spend longer being with a lovely calm snoot and giving him some touch/quiet time, and two, GAP trusted me to stay, as long as I didn't fall asleep in there with him.

What’s your best story or memory from your time volunteering with us?

Vollying with GAP is so rewarding. I do it as much for the dogs, as my own well being. If you've been thinking about it, why not try. There is no set time commitment as you can call your hours. Any little bit helps in giving a loving soul some much needed love and care. I'd say you'd probably want to have an affinity with dogs to start, and if you've never met a greyhound or have a preconceived idea of what a greyhound would be like,  enjoy having your mind blown! They will win you over in no time with their beautiful personalities. You will only be rewarded with love of the most gentle beings. And the volly managers are great too. They will look after you.

Since the dog is being brought into the program based on your interest, we ask that applicants be reasonably confident this is the greyhound they'd like to welcome into their family. Unlike our standard adoption process, you won't be able to meet multiple dogs at the same time however our team will share lots of information about this greyhound to help you determine if they're the perfect match for your family.

Ginny

5 years old

Ginny is a stunning black greyhound with the sleekest, shiniest coat and a gentle soul to match. Recently, he spent a month in our Prison Pet Partnership Program, where he worked hard learning valuable pet life skills to help prepare him for life in a loving forever home. Naturally an introvert, Ginny can be anxious and cautious in new situations, but he always does his best to be brave and takes comfort from patient, understanding people. Once Ginny trusts you, his true personality shines through. He becomes a happy, affectionate boy who loves spending time with his people and enjoys plenty of pats and attention. During foster care, we discovered that Ginny much prefers the outdoors to indoor living, so a secure backyard is a must for this zoomie-loving boy. Ginny is likely to thrive with an experienced greyhound owner and a family with teenage children who can appreciate his gentle nature and give him the time and space he needs to blossom.

Tiger

6 years old

Oh Sweet Tiger, you are such a gentle soul that wants nothing more than a patient home and lifetime supply of twiggy sticks and ear rubs. Tiger has come a long way since starting his GAP journey and recently came back from foster care where he learnt a lot of new things and found some confidence in his time. Tiger has come back with a newfound confidence, and we are so thrilled how far he has come, whilst he still has times where he is unsure, he tries his very best. We think Tiger may suit living in a home with or without another dog medium or larger and children 15 and over. He will do best in a home with a backyard in a nice quiet area as loud noises and lots of traffic are still very scary for him. Tiger may suit living with full time workers. Tiger has anxiety and is on medication to help with this.

Bailey is a sweet and friendly fawn boy with a happy, outgoing personality that makes him a favourite wherever he goes. Confident and personable, he loves meeting new people and is always keen to make new friends. This affectionate boy enjoys being close to his humans and has a charming habit of rubbing himself against his handler when he wants attention or a cuddle. Bailey is very treat-motivated, which makes him a fun companion and a willing learner. While he's generally quite confident, he does have a slightly submissive nature that adds to his gentle and lovable character. An active lad who enjoys getting out and about, Bailey can occasionally be strong on the lead when something catches his interest, but he remains easy-going and eager to please. With his wise expression and distinguished looks, he often gives the impression of being an older gentleman, adding even more character to his already endearing personality. Bailey is looking for a family who will enjoy his affectionate nature, appreciate his happy outlook on life, and provide plenty of love, adventures, and treats along the way. If you're searching for a loyal companion with a big heart and plenty of personality, Bailey could be your perfect match.

He is eager to please, often seeking eye contact as if checking in to make sure he's doing the right thing, and his happy, engaging personality makes him a joy to have around. Bob is looking for a home with children aged 10 years and over or an adult-only household where he can be included as part of the family. Due to his size and youthful exuberance, he is not suited to a home with elderly residents. He could happily live as an only dog soaking up all the attention, or with a medium to large canine companion who can match his friendly nature. Spyro

4 years old

Meet Spyro—LEGENDARY SPYRO, a name that truly reflects his larger‑than‑life charm. At four years old, this handsome greyhound carries himself with a quiet confidence, balancing a calm and easy going nature with a wonderfully social and outgoing personality. Spyro is the kind of dog who wins hearts instantly—affectionate, personable, and always ready to lean in close to his handler for a cuddle or a well‑deserved scratch (especially on his favourite spot—his rump!). While mostly polite on lead, his playful spirit shines through at home, where he loves toys, exploring new surroundings, and investigating the world by gently nudging or moving anything that catches his curiosity. Spyro can get pressure sores on his elbows, so needs to have nice soft bedding. Spyro has already proven himself to be a fantastic companion, having spent time in foster care with his greyhound friend Salma. He thrives in the company of other dogs and would do best in a home with a canine friend of similar size, as well as children aged 10 and over. On warm days, Spyro has his own unique way of keeping cool—standing happily in a shell pool like the legendary character he is. With his sweet nature, playful energy, and love of both people and pups, LEGENDARY SPYRO is ready to write the next chapter of his story with a family who will adore him just as much as he will adore them. Spyro has successfully completed some extra training with out onsite Behavioural Rehabilitation Program (BRP) and is now ready for adoption!
