The Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) will be waiving adoption fees at the upcoming three-day adoption event this Friday, January 18 to Sunday, January 20.
This is the first time the program will waive the $75 adoption fee with more than 100 greyhounds looking to start the year in new homes.
Following a successful three-day adoption event held in January 2018, where a record 103 greyhounds were adopted, organisers are hoping this weekend will see even more greyhounds find their forever homes.
Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton said the aim of the event was to see more greyhounds move to their new homes quicker.
GRV CEO Alan Clayton talks about what’s on offer at GAP’s 3 Day Adoption Event starting on Friday 18 January.
“We are committed to finding the right home for the right greyhound. We are hoping that by waiving our adoption fees we will encourage more people to consider adopting a greyhound,’’ Mr Clayton said.
“We always have young families and retirees attend the adoption days and we expect that by waiving the fees for this event, these well-deserving people will enjoy the benefits of this initiative at this time of year.
“Greyhounds make great pets. They are very placid dogs with a friendly and docile nature and are actually quite lazy with just a 15-minute walk needed each day.”
Potential adopters will still need to follow the usual adoption process and procedures to ensure that the right greyhound is matched to the right family.
People who wish to attend the weekend should register their interest beforehand by filling in the registration available on the GAP website at https://gap.grv.org.au/events/greyhound-adoption-day/.
If you wish to adopt on the day, please follow the link and complete the adoption application form which will help GAP find the right dog for you.
A full list of the dogs up for adoption will be sent to registered attendees before Thursday, January 17.
Even if you are not ready to adopt, this weekend is a great way to find out more about greyhounds with GAP staff and volunteers on hand to answer questions.
