Marian & Quinn

The handsome “Quinn” was my 14th foster and the excitement, challenge and reward of the experience is exactly the same with every foster I have had.

It is always exciting waiting to find out who your next assignment will be – boy or girl, age, colour, and why they need fostering.  Are they shy and timid? Are they boisterous and need to learn some manners? My favourites are the ones who need more socialisation.  I love taking them to coffee shops and parks and talking to people about them and showing them off.  It’s amazing how much interest they attract.

Fostering can throw up its challenges which is all part of the experience.  Sometimes they test their boundaries and your patience as a carer but when they come out the other side and follow you around and wander over for cuddles and generally look contented and happy you know you’ve done your job.

It is so rewarding to see the gradual change in them as they settle into a household routine and a little bit of spoiling.  Their individual personalities shine through and then my brain starts ticking over into “perfect match” mode.  What type of household would they be best suited to, what type of owner, do they need a yard to play in, would they be suited to apartment living?

As a foster carer you make an enormous difference to the dog in your care.  You give it love, you teach it manners and routine and you set it up for a successful life as a pet. It really doesn’t matter if you foster 1 or 100 – you are making a difference.

The 4 week assignment goes all too quickly and it’s time to pack their suitcase and send them on the final stage of their adoption journey to their “furever home”.

If you’ve been thinking about fostering a dog, GAP is the place to do it.  The friendly and supportive staff will make your experience a positive one and as many of us longer term carers have found out, you will make some wonderful friends – human and furry along the way.

Lilian

2 years old

No items found.
Meet Lilian, a loveable, slightly clumsy girl with a heart full of affection. Lilian has a puppyish and playful nature that makes her so endearing, paired with a wonderfully submissive temperament. She can be a little uncoordinated at times which just adds to her charm. Lilian could suit a home as an only dog where she can soak up all the love, or she may be suitable to live with dogs of any size. She will need a home with a secure backyard to play and burn the playful energy. Lilian may be suitable to live with children ages 10+.

Waffles

4 years old

Meet the sweet and affectionate Waffles. She is a true introvert on first meeting her but soon warms up and is your loyal shadow. Due to her anxieties we feel she would do best in a home with a confident canine companion to show her the ropes and help her inner brave shine through. She will likely do best in a quiet home (and neighbourhood) and with no children or children in their teenage years.

Trixie

6 years old

Have you seen ears as adorable as Trixie's? Well we think they are pretty divine. Sweet Trixie is ready and waiting for her pawfect match to come and take her home to a home that will take her on adventures, shower her in her favourite things (especially toys) and laugh everyday at her antics. This girl has a real zest for life and her age isn't slowing her down! We think Trixie may suit living with another medium or larger canine buddy and children 5 and over. Even though she is a happy go lucky girl, we think she may suit living in an apartment as long as she gets plenty of daily enrichment and walks.

Isha ARP

3 years old

Isha is a beautiful 3yr old greyhound with the sweetest nature and the most charming smile you’ll ever see.

She can be a little shy when meeting new people, but give her a bit of time and you’ll see her playful, energetic side come to life. Once she warms up, Isha absolutely loves being around her people and has a way of making everyone around her smile right back.

Isha is currently living in a home with two young children and two other greyhounds, so she’s well used to family life. While she has grown up around little kids, she can get a bit excited by them (purely out of love!), so she would likely be best suited to a home with older children (10 and over) who understand her gentle but enthusiastic nature.

She would be best suited to a home with medium or larger male dogs and isn’t suited to living with cats.

Isha would thrive in a quieter, more relaxed environment and we think regional living would suit her perfectly, where she can enjoy space, routine and a calm lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

If you’re looking for a loyal companion with a big heart and an even bigger smile, Isha might just be your girl.

Sniper ARP

2 years old

Sniper is very handsome with kind eyes. He doesn’t understand how big he is sometimes and can be strong on lead. He is excitable and enthusiastic when you first meet him then calms down and is very sweet and friendly. Sniper may suit living with or without a robust canine friend that’s medium size or larger and children in their teenage years. He will likely do best in a home with a backyard so he can run and play in.

This dog is part of our Assisted Rehoming Program (ARP). We have behavioural and health assessed this lovely dog, and they will remain with their racing owners until they find an adoptive home, at which point they are brought back into GAP. This means that should you be interested in adopting this dog, we are bringing the dog into GAP on the understanding that you will be adopting this particular dog, and not other dogs currently in our care.
