Claire

Claire helps out at our Seymour location as an enrichment volunteer.

She’s always happy for a catch up and loves to update us on her recent fur-baby, previous helper dog, Stix. Claire has come along to behaviour days, workplace visits, and adoption days to represent GAP and sing the praises of greyhounds as pets

What’s your name, how do you volunteer with GAP, and when did you first start volunteering with us?

Hi my name is Claire and I volunteer at the Seymour location doing enrichment activities with the dogs. I also have been involved with a few community outreach events at various locations around the state. I have been volunteering with GAP for almost 4 years.

What made you decide to become a GAP volunteer?

I have volunteered at various other animal welfare organisations in the past and when my husband and I relocated close to Seymour I signed up to the next available induction day. I was aware of GAP from having seen them at The Royal Melbourne Show many years ago, and I liked the idea of helping transition a professional athlete to becoming a retired family member.

What’s your favourite part of being a GAP volunteer?

Greyhound ears! They are so soft. It’s also great being able to get a greyhound out of their kennel and take them for a walk around the Seymour location and let them sniff and pee and enjoy the sights. It’s also great having a chat with the staff, everyone is so lovely. We also had a fabulous foster fail, not a greyhound but one of the hard working helper dogs. STIX has been a wonderful addition to our home.

What’s your best story or memory from your time volunteering with us?

Going to the community events are a lot of fun. Everyone who comes and says hello seem to have a story about someone they know have a greyhound or they own one themselves and love to tell you about them and often will show you a picture of them. It’s also great when a person who is hesitant to approach the dogs then end up standing there and rubbing those greyhound ears.

What would you say to anyone thinking of volunteering with GAP?

Volunteering at GAP will improve your mood, nothing works better than a wagging tail. You also get to connect with people of similar interests. Also the knowledge that your assisting a greyhound move towards their forever home.

Meet Fran, a beautiful greyhound with the softest heart to match her elegant looks. Polite and gentle by nature, Fran is a sweet, affectionate girl who enjoys quiet companionship and kind attention. She has a slightly submissive personality and is happiest in calm environments where she can feel safe and loved. Fran might be well suited to a home with children aged 5+ who understand gentle handling, or with adults looking for a low-key, loving companion. Fran’s easygoing nature means she’s a great match for apartments and could comfortably live with elderly adopters. She would be happiest as an only dog or with a compatible canine companion who shares her relaxed outlook on life. With the right introductions, she may also suit a home with a cat. If you’re looking for a tender, well-mannered greyhound who will bring quiet affection into your home, Fran could be the perfect fit.

Maddox

3 years old

Meet Maddox, a strikingly handsome blue greyhound with unforgettable golden eyes and a big, joyful personality. Friendly, playful, and delightfully puppyish, Maddox loves to engage with the world around him and brings a lot of energy and charm into everyday life. He would thrive in a home with children aged 10+ or adults who can match his enthusiasm and enjoy an active, interactive dog who still has plenty of youthful spirit. Maddox is best suited to a home where he can have space to move and play, so apartment living isn’t recommended. He would be happiest as an only dog or with a confident, sturdy canine companion who can keep up with his play style—older or frail dogs (or people) wouldn’t be a good match for him. With the right introductions, Maddox may be cat friendly. If you’re looking for a fun-loving, lively greyhound with movie-star looks and an affectionate heart, Maddox could be your perfect companion.

What a unique name Jigsaw is! Jigsaw has the cutest pointy ears when he is alert. Jigsaw suffers from some anxiety, sudden noises or movements can startle him but generally recovers quickly and moves on. Once his true personality comes out he is very happy playing with his ball and rope, he shakes hands and gets along well with dogs of similar size, saying that he may suit living as an only dog or with a dog of similar size, he will likely suit children aged in their teenage years. Sorry Jigsaw wouldn’t likely suit living in an apartment.
