Legal Requirements
Greyhounds have special legal requirements in Victoria. Find out everything you need to know about council registration and microchip registration.
1. Local Council Registration
After your adoption is official (at the completion of your 3 week Foster to Adopt period), you will need to register your pet greyhound with your local council.
Council registration and microchip registration are different types of registration. Please contact your local council for information about how to register your greyhound with them.
Your greyhound's microchip is already registered with GRV.
Further information about dog ownership can be found here.
2. Microchipping
Is Greyhound registration different from my other animals?
Yes! If you have previously owned a dog other than a greyhound or a cat, you may be familiar with your pet's microchip number being registered with a Microchip Registry, such as Central Animal Records (CAR) or Australasia Animal Register (AAR).
Your greyhound is microchipped and registered on the Greyhound Microchip Registry (GMR) (as greyhounds are not generally registered on other registries).
The Greyhound Microchip Registry keeps a record of the current ownership details of the greyhound, which enables local council, shelters, and pounds to make swift contact with the current owner should the greyhound happen to wander from home.
As such, it is very important that the contact details recorded on the Greyhound Microchip Registry are current and kept up to date.
When you adopt a greyhound, GAP must submit a Notice of Retirement as a Pet - Transfer to New Owner form which will provide the Greyhound Microchip Registry with your contact details for the registry record. You will also need to provide details of a secondary contact person that can be contacted if your greyhound is found and you are uncontactable. Our team will guide you through this.
You will need to ensure that your contact details remain up to date. If your address or phone number changes you can notify the Greyhound Microchip Registry by submitting a Change of Contact Details (Retired Greyhound) form. If you re-home the greyhound to another person, you should ensure that a Change of Ownership (Retired Greyhound) form is submitted. All forms and further information about the Greyhound Microchip Registry can be found at https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/grv-microchip-registry/.
Meet our dogs ready for adoption
All greyhounds adopted from GAP are de-sexed, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and health checked.

Vance ARP
Vance is a handsome boy with a bright and enthusiastic personality. His ears are just the best and prove to be the therapy everyone needs in their life. He is friendly, outgoing and personable and will show everyone that Greyhounds are anything but grey! He may suit being an only pet or may be suitable to live with medium or large dogs, he may also suit a household with children aged 10 and over. He may also suit full time workers as long as he gets plenty of enrichment whilst you are out.
This dog is part of our Assisted Rehoming Program (ARP). We have behavioural and health assessed this lovely dog, and they will remain with their racing owners until they find an adoptive home, at which point they are brought back into GAP. This means that should you be interested in adopting this dog, we are bringing the dog into GAP on the understanding that you will be adopting this particular dog, and not other dogs currently in our care.

Chilli ARP
Chilli is a fun, happy girl with a big personality. She’s sweet, pretty, friendly and full of confidence, with a very puppyish, playful nature.
Chilli is a little goofy, super affectionate and brings lots of enthusiasm and excitement wherever she goes. Chilli would suit an active family who can keep up with her energy. She will require a home that has a secure backyard. Chilli may be best as an only dog or may be suitable to live with medium or large robust dogs who can match her playful and boisterous style. Due to her energy, she isn’t suitable to live with older owners but may suit a family with children aged 10+
