From Track to Home: Part 3: Finding Their Perfect Match – Welcome Home
We’ve followed a greyhound’s journey from retirement (Part 1), through their time settling in and getting to know our team at GAP (Part 2), and now we reach the part everyone’s been waiting for: finding the right family and bringing a greyhound home for good.
Matchmaking, GAP-style
By the time a greyhound is ready for adoption, our team has built a genuinely detailed picture of who they are: their energy levels, their quirks, what kind of household they’d thrive in, and any special considerations an adopter should know about. This is the information we use to help match each dog with the right adopter, rather than simply pairing whoever walks through the door with whichever dog is available. Every adopter is different too. Some are after a low-energy companion who’s happy to nap the day away in an apartment. Others want an adventurous walking buddy, or a gentle, patient dog who’ll fit seamlessly into a busy family household with kids. Getting to know both the dog and the prospective home means we can make recommendations that set everyone up for a lasting, happy relationship, not just a successful first meeting.
Meeting your match
If you’ve applied to adopt, our team will talk you through which greyhounds we think could be a good fit based on your lifestyle, living situation, and experience with dogs. You’ll have the opportunity to meet the dog (or dogs) we suggest, see how you get along, and ask any questions you have about their personality, history, or care needs. For greyhounds in our Assisted Rehoming Program (ARP), the process looks a little different: once GAP has behaviourally and medically assessed these dogs, they remain with their racing owners until an adopter has been confirmed, at which point they’re brought back into GAP’s care specifically to be matched with that adopter. It’s simply another pathway to the same outcome, the right dog, in the right home.
Adoption day and beyond
When everything lines up, adoption day arrives – and with it, the official start of a greyhound’s new life as a family pet. Every greyhound adopted from GAP comes desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed, and health checked, so you can focus on the fun part: helping your new best friend settle into their forever home. Of course, adoption day isn’t really the end of the journey either – it’s just the start of the next, much longer chapter. Our resource hub is full of practical guides covering everything from feeding and exercise through to introducing your greyhound to other pets, so you’ve got support every step of the way.
