Nathan Murphy: GAP ambassador
It’s a big month for Nathan Murphy in more ways than one.
The Collingwood premiership hero has just decided to retire from the AFL due to concussion issues at just 24 years of age.
April is the greyhound world’s National Adoption Month, with Nathan the face of Victoria’s activations, which will culminate in an adoption day at The Meadows in Melbourne on Sunday 28 April.
A dog lover who has owned three racing greyhounds with former teammate Jaidyn Stephenson (now at North Melbourne Kangaroos), Nathan is only too happy to support efforts to rehome greyhounds that are no longer suitable for racing.
“It (GAP) is a great program that has been set up by Greyhound Racing Victoria.”
“It’s obviously Greyhound Adoption Month this April. It’s a great initiative. They set these dogs up with the right families and there’s been a lot of success with it.”
“It’s really nice and comforting to know that these guys are going to the right homes.”
“They’re so calm and gentle and I’m told some of them can sleep up to 23 hours a day. You just have to exercise them a bit during that one hour that they’re awake.”
Meet our dogs ready for adoption
All greyhounds adopted from GAP are de-sexed, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and health checked.

Sniper is very handsome with kind eyes. He doesn’t understand how big he is sometimes and can be strong on lead. He is excitable and enthusiastic when you first meet him then calms down and is very sweet and friendly. Sniper may suit living with or without a robust canine friend that’s medium size or larger and children in their teenage years. He will likely do best in a home with a backyard so he can run and play in.

We have behavioural and health assessed this lovely dog, and they will remain with their racing owners until they find an adoptive home, at which point they are brought back into GAP. Thomas (known as Tommy to his friends) is a calm and easy-going boy. He is outgoing without being overwhelming, he is affectionate and friendly. Thomas may be suitable to live with children aged 10+, and he may be suitable to live with small, medium or large dogs. If your looking for a calm, affectionate boy, Thomas could be the PAWfect addition to your family.

Meet Gwen,Gwen is a sweet and pretty little girl. Gwen is introverted and a little cautious. Gwen can be anxious in situations, but she does try to come out of her shell. With the right family, love and patience she will really blossom.Gwen may be suitable to live with a family that has older kids 15+. She also may be suitable to live with calm and respectful small, medium and large dogs.

This means that should you be interested in adopting this dog, we are bringing the dog into GAP on the understanding that you will be adopting them. As such, you will not be able to meet any other dogs, as you otherwise would be able to.

Meet the young Blaze. He is just as beautiful on the inside as he is on the outside. Blaze is a friendly and outgoing boy who loves meeting everyone and anyone and loves affection. Blaze may suit living with or without a fellow playful pooch of similar size and children aged 5 years and older.
