Victoria’s Greyhound Adoption Program held its first Adoption Day in eight months at its Seymour facility on Saturday afternoon.

Some 238 people registered to attend the event in the hope of being matched to one of the 61 greyhounds that were up for adoption on the day.

At day’s end 45 greyhounds were adopted, with the remaining dogs to stay at GAP until they find their forever homes.

The first greyhound successfully matched and adopted today was Stuart, who was adopted by Nicholas Jovici.

“I was interested in Stuart as soon as I saw him in the Dogologue catalogue,” Jovici said.

“I work full time and I live with my mum, so I wanted a companion to keep my mum company.”

“I get plenty of downtime, so would be nice to have someone to come home to and spend time with.”

Potential adopted travelled from all over the state for the event, including Lucas Scott, who made an eight-hour round trip from Horsham and adopted 23-month-old Tiger.

“He (Tiger) was the first greyhound I saw today and I feel like it was meant to be. I sussed him out and was very impressed that he was playful, but chilled and he just loves a pat,” Lucas said.

GAP staff and volunteers were on hand to answer any questions about greyhounds as pets as well as ensuring that each greyhound was matched to an ideal home.
To help with the matching, all greyhounds are divided into groups. The yellow group greyhounds were best suited to children 10 years and over and prefer the company of another dog.

The blue group was for greyhounds that are best suited to children under 10 years and don’t need the company of another dog.

The purple group was for greyhounds that are best suited to children 10 years and over and that don’t need the company of another dog, and finally the pink group was for greyhounds that are best suited to children under 10 years and prefer the company of another dog.
