Christmas hound!

Welcome to Edition Seven of the GAP newsletter! We hope you’ll find it an informative and enjoyable read.

This newsletter is a little early as we are closed over the Christmas period. We'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and hope that 2008 is a wonderful year for you all. Thank you to everyone who has given homes to greyhounds in 2007, to all our brilliant foster carers and volunteers (we'd be lost without you!), to all the generous people who have given us donations, to our sponsors Advance and Bayer, and to the greyhound trainers and retired greyhound owners who have offered their support and good wishes.

There are many exciting things planned for 2008 including the property redevelopment which will begin in early February. Stay tuned for more news!

OZZIE all ready for Christmas!

GAP always has lots of fantastic greyhounds that are available for adoption. Each month we will choose one special dog to profile. But remember all of our dogs ready to adopt can be found on our website, just click on the link below to check out all of the dogs currently available.

HOME BRAND DOG by Rocky (the Staffy) Anderson

Mum brought home a strange dog today. He's the same shape as my big sister, Nyah, but he's blue and I've heard that's a pretty special and popular colour. His name is... well, the poor fella doesn't even have a name yet but it's his birthday tomorrow so we're trying very hard to find a good name to give him for his birthday present. Imagine getting to four years of age and not having a name. Anyway, the humans have nicknamed him Home Brand (No Name) for now but even that's been shortened to HB.

My big sis and I are not quite sure what to think of him yet so we are making the most of staying indoors while HB gets used to being outside. He cried for a bit which is a bit of a pain but he'll soon get more priviledges if he plays his cards right. He got a nice bone when he was quiet for a little while but he's a bit dumb because he started crying again when he finished it so then Mr Squirty came out and he got a spray of water in the face. I don't like Mr Squirty myself so I'm keeping out of the line of fire.

I'm only one year old and I've already learnt lots of manners so why is this boy four and got none? Mum says we have to be paitent with him because he's never lived in a home with a family before so he doesn't know the ropes yet. Ahh well, looks like some interesting times ahead and we'll have to put a bit of effort into helping him "get it".

We're all really looking forward to his birthday so we can share some of his birthday cheesecake!

Rocky

UPDATE: HB did indeed receive a new name for his birthday - he is now known as Ozzie. As you can see in the photo, he is all dressed up for Christmas! Ozzie was one of a group of greyhounds recently rescued by the RSPCA. He is a lovely boy who is quickly learning the ropes with the help of Rocky and Nyah, and he'll be looking for a home all of his own in mid-January.

BEANIE

Beanie wrote a poem this month which I thought I'd share with you all. It's called

BEANIE'S 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

On the first day of Christmas
My parents laughed at me
Because I'm a snorting Pug whose name is Beanie.

On the second day of Chrstimas,
My parents gave to me
A bath and a brush
Because I'm a stinky Pug whose name is Beanie.

On the third day of Christmas
My parents gave to me
A bone to share with Zephyr,
A bath and a brush,
Because I'm a starving Pug whose name is Beanie.

On the fourth day of Christmas
My parents gave to me
A newspaper to rip to pieces
A bone to share with Zephyr,
A bath and a brush,
Because I'm a destructive Pug whose name is Beanie

On the fifth day of Christmas
My parents gave to me
Nothing because I was naughty.

On the sixth day of Christmas
My parents gave to me
A ball to toss around
A new toy duck
A newspaper to rip to pieces
A bone to share with Zephyr
A bath and a brush
Because I'm a playful Pug whose name is Beanie

On the seventh day of Christmas
My parents gave to me
Roast chicken for dinner
A ball to toss around
A new toy duck
A newspaper to rip to pieces
A bone to share with Zephyr
A bath and a brush
Because I'm a spoilt Pug whose name is Beanie

On the eighth day of Christmas
My parents gave to me
A couch to pull apart
Roast chicken for dinner
A ball to toss around
A new toy duck
A newspaper to rip to pieces
A bone to share with Zephyr
A bath and a brush
Because I'm a wicked Pug whose name is Beanie

On the ninth day of Christmas
My parents gave to me
A visitor to bark at
A couch to pull apart
Roast chicken for dinner
A ball to toss around
A new toy duck
A newspaper to rip to pieces
A bone to share with Zephyr
A bath and a brush
Because I'm a ferocious Pug whose name is Beanie

On the tenth day of Christmas
My parents gave to me
A nice soft bed
A visitor to bark at
A couch to pull apart
Roast chicken for dinner
A ball to toss around
A new toy duck
A newspaper to rip to pieces
A bone to share with Zephyr
A bath and a brush
Because I'm a tired Pug whose name is Beanie

On the eleventh day of Christmas
My parents gave to me
A garbage bag to tear open
A nice soft bed
A visitor to bark at
A couch to pull apart
Roast chicken for dinner
A ball to toss around
A new toy duck
A newspaper to rip to pieces
A bone to share with Zephyr
A bath and a brush
Because I'm a bad Pug whose name is Beanie

On the twelth day of Christmas
My parents gave to me
A kiss for me and Oscar
A garbage bag to tear open
A nice soft bed
A visitor to bark at
A couch to pull apart
Roast chicken for dinner
A ball to toss around
A new toy duck
A newspaper to rip to pieces
A bone to share with Zephyr
A bath and a brush
Because I'm a HAPPY Pug whose name is Beanie

Happy Holidays!

THANK YOU!

A HUGE thank you to all the people who so generously offered to foster a greyhound over Christmas. Thanks to those of you who so kindly stuck up your hand to help out, we have very few greyhounds left sitting in the kennels over Christmas. Who knows, maybe the greyhounds will charm their new foster families so well that they’ll never leave?

Thank you to the following people who are new to fostering and have offered to help out over this period:

Sarah & Pete Lovison
Jo Devlin
Ulla Werner
Rebekah Duyshart
Selena Kemp
Carolyn McRobert
Jullie Tilley
Sandra Baguley
Bell family
Fensling family
Selena Luscombe
Steve & Lisa Fowler

Of course, the biggest THANK YOU goes out to our regular foster carers. Without these wonderful souls, GAP simply could not exist. Thank you all for your patience and commitment to helping the greyhounds – you’re saints!

2008 will be a really exciting year for GAP, with some terrific new incentives being launched. Stay tuned to find out more!

Of course, we always need more foster carers to help more greyhounds find homes. Why not give it a try while you’re on holidays? It’ll give the kids something to do, and you’ll be helping to save a life!

Enjoy your holidays!

Mischka at GAP

Our greyhound Mischka

Hello everyone at GAP,

Just writing to thank you for the opportunity to foster and adopt my beautiful greyhound Mischka (formerly Tanya).

When she arrived to live with us in our first floor apartment, she was very uncertain, extremely timid and reserved. She wouldn't look at us, slept curled up in the corner and looked very woebegone! She always had her tail between her legs and was scared of other dogs and people. She shook like a leaf when walking in the busy main streets.

Every day we've cuddled, kissed and given her support and love. She has been very spoilt! She has her kibble but it is soaked in beef stock. She eats sardines in oil, salmon and tuna. Her treats are pigs ears, smackos, kangaroo jerky, chicken necks, pizza (without onion), peanutbutter sandwiches, oh also cheese now and then.

Because we live in an apartment we take her out on little walks four or five times a day. She loves her walkies!

She now shyly wags her tail for a couple of seconds before walkies. When setting off, she "gazelles" or launches off with excitement! We've had her for five weeks, and now she is showing her gorgeous white fants and is giving us huge doggie smiles and grins. Each week, she comes more out of her shell. She is slowly blossoming and getting more confident day by day. We really couldn't love her more!

Our apartment is only small and she is such a good girl. She is totally toilet trained. She never ever barks. Once she did one woof, and that was when our cheeky cat smacked her on the nose. She is just so well behaved.

The only naughty thing she has done was chew three of my house and balcony plants... I think she was just "trimming them" like topirary? (Edward Scissorhands).

To prospective adopters... tell them how rewarding it is to see these gentle, sweet, elegant dogs blossom when evolving into family pets and loved members of their family.

Yours sincerely,

Rachael, David, Mischka and Minxamena (cat)
