ADOPTION DAY: Greyhound ‘bug’ heading to Ballarat

The greyhound bug is heading to Ballarat with an Adoption Day to be held at the Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club on Sunday, 28 August.

Local Hayley Lennon always knew she wanted a greyhound in her life, and since welcoming Alf (pictured below) into her family in 2012 she hasn’t looked back.

“Alf is the perfect pet! He is low maintenance, kind and affectionate; he really does tick all the boxes for me and my family,” Hayley explained.

After a move from Melbourne City to Ballarat last year, Hayley thought it would be beneficial for both herself and Alf to start a walking group to meet new friends – both humans and greyhounds.

“We have been walking for over 20 months now. When we started we had three greyhounds, now we have up to 20 greyhounds at each walk!”

Dedication seems to be a pattern for greyhound related organisations – with this group regularly walking in the ever present ‘misty rain’ of Ballarat. It is hoped that the group’s wonderful work in spreading the word about greyhounds as pets will result in number of greyhounds finding their forever home at the upcoming Adoption day.

The Ballarat Greyhound Walking Group meets the fourth Sunday of each month at 10am, out the front of Piper’s by the Lake in Ballarat (map provided below).

“We don’t walk the whole lake as most of the greys wouldn’t survive! It’s fairly slow paced so old and young are welcome,” Hayley said.

The Ballarat walking group is set to rapidly expand following the upcoming Adoption Day, which is occurring on the back of a successful adoption day in Geelong last month, which saw 31 greyhounds find homes.

Ballarat’s August 28 Adoption Day kicks off at 11am and will run to 1pm, with a light lunch provided. To register for this event, please email adoptionday@grv.org.au with your name, number of people who will attend and post code.
