‘Adoption Day’ a Stepping Stone for some, Dream come True for others

The dreams of many greyhounds came true at Sunday’s ‘Adoption Day’ at The Meadows in Melbourne, as former racers found their ‘happily ever after’.

Among them was Bronte, a striking brindle dog pictured above with new owner Fiona Quinn and her partner Barney. Bronte is destined to be the missing piece in the puzzle of Fiona’s home in Boronia.

“Until recently I had two 10 year old pet greyhounds – Venus and Axel  – but Venus has passed away and Axel has been pining ever since,” Fiona said. “I have no doubt that Axel will be absolutely delighted when we bring Bronte home today.”

More than 70 people came along to the ‘Adoption Day’, many of whom met and interacted with the placid canines with a view to adopting a greyhound in the future, while others left a tad disappointed to go home empty handed.

“We had our hearts set on adopting Johnno today. But it wasn’t to be as we both work full-time and we found out that Johnno is best suited to a home where he can enjoy the company of another dog,” said one young couple from Carlton.

A key message reiterated to the couple and to others on the day was that patience is a key element in finding a greyhound that fits perfectly into your lifestyle. The Greyhound Adoption Program places great emphasis on matching the right greyhound to the right home, and as such the return rate is extremely low.

“We always have plenty of greyhounds available for adoption at our property in Seymour. People can always make an appointment to come and see us to meet the dogs. It’s an easy one hour drive from Melbourne,” said Greyhound Adoption Program Manager, Larissa Darragh.

Every greyhound not adopted on the day has since returned to Seymour, where they will remain until the right adopter comes along.
